Manuscripts don't burn. Acrylic on canvas, 80x100 cm, 2016. The title of the painting "Manuscripts Don't Burn" is a quote from Mikhail Bulgakov's novel "The Master and Margarita". This utopian-mystical expression somehow always moves me a lot. As, indeed, probably, many Bulgakov's readers. When I tell students about the history of baroque opera, I often have to say phrases like "the manuscript has not survived", "the score has disappeared", "there is only a brief excerpt from the opera", "no information", "the archive (- library) burned during the (various titles) war". How unfair and offensive that is!
